I've lived in CA now for 14 years. It was 1996 (Thanks for the correction XRLQ) when Prop 209 the CA Civil Rights Initiative passed. Ward Connerly (author of "Creating Equal") continues to put teeth into Prop 209 by having the law enforced by those who try to ignore it.
Betsy from Betsy's Page (one of my daily visits) points out that there is one bright spot. Michigan passed the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative.
The way I put it is that my daughters (who are 7 and 10) are in public school and that they should not be discriminated against or given preferential treatment to when compared to any other girls who grow and learn in public school and apply for colleges later in life. Look at their merit, effort and other quantitative qualities. In order to heal racial divisions we need to start now. Our kids are attending schools now. Teach them well. Teach them about merit.
Prop 209 passed in 1996, but got tied up in court and didn't take effect until 1997, too late to affect that year's admissions process. At the University of California, however, SP-1 and SP-2 were already set to start in 1997, at least for graduate schools.

Thanks XRLQ. I read your stuff from time to time. You are definitely one of the smart ones out there...
