James Doohan left an alchoholic fathers at age 19 to become a decorated WWII veteran with the Canadian Forces, stopped a bullet with his cigarette tin during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He was wounded 6 times during that war and lost a finger. One of the greatest generation. He will be sorely missed.

Yeah, he lost the FU finger on the right hand. But he subsequently became the reputed "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force" anyway. He was the real deal.
