Mrs. Smash had an accident. She’s okay, but in the hospital, in some (medicated) pain and may have a hard road ahead of her.
THE VERTEBRAE are designed to protect the spinal column. When she fell off her horse, my wife's L1 vetebra compressed like a cardboard box -- but her spinal column remained intact.
Send the Smashes your prayers and your well-wishes.
My wife has owned horses and been riding since she was 14. When we married (ahem! she was 25 by then, not 14) we bought horses for her, me, and my daughter. My young daughter fell off in a jumping lesson, and her safety helmet sliced her nose and lower lip and chin. I fell apart in the emergency room. I feel off so much that I could pass an vet exam on the underside of a horse, including a death-defying 60 seconds under my Arab mare in quicksand. My wife did not fall off until she turned 45. We have watched as horse-riding friends at middle age have been injured, some horribly, by horses they loved. Now I am trying to convince my wife it is time to slow down and maybe content herself with currying. She will have none of it. Mrs. Smash hit the jackpot of horse bad luck. Our hearts go out to her. We live with the fear that my wife's turn might be next. We hope that by saying so we will turn luck in our favor - and that is all it is: luck. Good luck to Mrs. Smash.
