Fallout From The Iraq War

I’m not a soccer fan, but this is just too cool.

Iraq beats Portugal, 4-2 in the Olympics.

It’s amazing what can be achieved with love of sport being the motivator, rather than the threat of torture. I imagine that there will be a lot of non-Iraqis and non-fans of soccer rooting for this team.

That's great news for Iraq. Reading the article this sentence jumped out at me:

"The nation managed to cobble together a team amid ongoing conflict at home and efforts to rebuild an Olympic committee that was previously run by Saddam Hussein’s late son, Odai, who allegedly tortured players when they fell out of favor."

Gotta love it when reporters insist on giving the benefit of the doubt to a documented mass murdering sadist.

The only reason I'm interested in the Olympics this year is to see how the Iraqi's do. Months ago I had a vision of the Iraqi contingent marching into the Olympic stadium waving their own flag as a free people and it nearly brought me to tears. I know I'll be blubbering like a baby when I watch the opening ceramonies tonight. Assuming of course some jackass doesn't try to blow anything up.
