I think a new bit of advice needs to enter the American lexicon: "Never bring a Spaniard to watch your back in a fight."

I worry that the terrorist have learned that the limp willed people can be forced to withdraw, and even change their votes. They won this one and I will never let the memory fade of what happened.
I also fear they will make this SOP for all western nations. So many are scared of the fight. They see the chains as something they can suffer. Even here.

Juliette, I have to disagree with your headline for this posting. It should read "Bend Over FORWARDS, slather on the KY."
Sorry to be so graphic, it's just that I'm so disgusted with my friends, the Spanish. I wonder what will happen when al Qaeda strikes Spain again? Blame it on the Israeli's?

No doubt the overall effect of all this is to make the WoT more difficult.
But the US was always going to have to do the work in this war anyway. That's the way its been for the last 100 years and that's the way its going to continue to be for the foreseeable future.
The question is; does it get to the point of World War where the Europeans begin to lose and we have to go in ala WWI & WWII? How bad is it going to get? Its very clear the terrorists are not giving up. We can either kill them or wait for them to kill us. The Europeans don't want to fight. OK, fine. They chose not to fight Hitler too.
Not fighting has not worked though. In my opinion we either have to defeat them or wait for the next attack. Either the Islamofascist threat has to be eliminated or we continue to live with terrorism - compounded by the growing presence of WMD in terror states.

The saddest part is that they actually believe this will deter attacks on Spain or its citizens. Appeasement follies.

Appeasement never works.
And who would do something like this?

The irony is that the crocodile isn't even going to eat them last. I can't wait to see the burqa-clad babes on the beach in Majorca.

Let's not be too smug. Who has the most modern nuclear forces other than the US, Russia, and China? That's right, several EU countries. What will it be like in another 10 years when the Islamists have one or more of those governments thoroughly penetrated, all legal and above board in the name of multiculti?

I wonder if the Dominican Republic will follow Honduras and Spain. Troops from the Spanish speaking Caribbean went to Iraq as part of the Spanish contingent. Spain has done a disservice not just to the U.S., but also to countries like Honduras, Dominican Republic, and those few other OAS countries that sent men to support an ally. Unfortunately, the English speaking Caribbean took the French position.

My main concern about Spain is that if they leave Iraq with their tails between their legs, the ETA will get the impression that escalating the level of violence will lead to a bigger payoff.

Personally, I believe that this was not in fact the occasion to take out the Spanish troops of Iraq, at least after March 11, because the terrorists could interpret this as a concession to their activities
Now, I don't allow that nobody gives fight lessons against the terrorism to Spain, mainly United States. You, the north american people, are not in position of how to teach to the Spaniards to fight against the terrorism, because we are suffering the terrorism during 40 years (ETA).
And the Spanish troops left of Iraq because they should never enter in that country. This is a illegitimate war. This is the invasion of a sovereign country, where have many died innocent, have people's thousands been left without employment and where it was tortured their citizens from the shades..Do you want the same thing for your country?
But I believe that you don't find out anything. The fight against the terrorism is not the fight against a normal army. To fight against the terrorism, in this case the Islamic terrorism, there is to be won the heart of that people, to isolate the terrorists. But you solve everything with invasions, bombings, etc...Now it is wanted to punish the soldiers that tortured the Iraqis, and do I ask...Why it is not also punished president Bush and all their " Court " for to allow that hundred of North American soldiers die in this war so stupid, and to make enter their bodies without the knowledge of the society, without having at least honors of heroes?
Don't you see it? You not even know to who you have in the Power. And if you want to give to the European democracy lessons and it fights against the terrorism, you are very, very, very far from to make something like that.
Also, Spain doesn't owe anything historically to United States. You snatched many things to Spain, you didn't intervene here to get rid us of the fascism (but you made it in France), and you have the honor of having a criminal of war like Henry Kissinger (he was the main weapon to remove a democratic president as Allende and to put to an executioner, Pinochet) and it is Premio Nobel of the Peace (happiness!). And I can continue, because your curriculum is impressive.¡Ah! And I want to remember that you have very bad memory...Bin Lade has been trained by the CIA, and Sadam Hussein was friend from the United States until to United States stopped to interest its services.
I wait the new JFK (John Forbes Kerry) takes a better Era to its country

I am spanish and forgive me my english, is very bad.
Thank you

¡Ah! And I like the North American people a lot, the citizens from United States, but not the Government of your country, mainly the Republican Party
Posted by: Pascual | May 16, 2004 at 04:34 AM
Your English is fine, Pascual. Your reasoning needs work however. Whether you like *us,* the president, or not has no bearing on the subject of terrorism. This isn't a popularity contest. It's a fight for survival.
As to what your country may owe the US, you owe us the same thing that you'd owe to any other that you've given your word to: to keep that word. It's called honor.
If John Kerry wins the US presidency, he'll go to the UN to administer the Iraq situation. This is the same UN that ignored Rwanda and Sudan, and robbed the Iraqi people blind with the oil-for-food program. I shudder at that prospect.
Should the terrorists attack your home country again, I hope that you will rest comfortably, knowing that your government or the UN will appease them.
Enjoy Sharia Law, because that's what's coming down the road for you and the rest of Europe if you think that those who confront terrorists are more dangerous than the terrorists themselves.

Dear friend...
The politics to put an end to the terrorism is to be won the sympathy of the Arab countries, is it necessary to be won the heart of these people...Why? Because this will be the way to isolate the terrorists
Is necessary to help morally and ecomicamente to those countries to isolate to the terrorist...Why? Because the terrorism feeds of the misery, of the poverty. Of people's desperation. But if you, instead of using this diplomacy, only use the bombings, and also, you steal the natural resources of these countries, you will only be able to engender hate, and then you don't hope they receive you with roses.
And I am not against United States, is a democratic country, and the attack and the misfortune of the twin towers was an attack to United States, also to the world of the democracy, but please, don't try to convince me that this has been a fight against the terrorism. The world is full of terrorists and of dictators, but the president Bush has not sent to those countries to your Army because these countries don't have the oil wealth of Iraq. And it is not necessary to be very clever to know this
And I repeat, that here we know what is the terrorism for 40 years, very well, and also here we have fought against the muslim invader, but that is already another history

I don´t know that is the Sharia, but you makes a mistake if you think that here the Muslims have it easy. In France, for example, a Imam already has been expelled for to make apology of the violence against the women (they wanted to enter in the schools, universities, etc, with these veils), there they have many problems, mainly for the veil that have the muslim women in the head; and in Spain the muslims will have serious problems if they make apology of the terrorism in the mosques
